Vanilla – Queen of Spices
Vanilla is the fruit of a white orchid, which is native to Mexico and spread to many tropical countries over the years. Vanilla is one of the world's most coveted culinary herb and the second most expensive spice after saffron, because growing and processing vanilla pods is labour-intensive.
While the far cheaper synthetic vanillin consists of only one substance, real vanilla is a harmonious blend of nearly 200 individual substances! This is why real vanilla not only offers a unique flavour and enticing aroma, it is also beneficial to health. For centuries it was cultivated and considered as remarkable gift of nature by the peoples of Central America, and pharmacies of the 18th century started selling it as medicinal powder and tincture.
In ancient scriptures, vanilla is described as an aphrodisiac and invigorating remedy. This is not surprising as vanillin, the most important ingredient of the vanilla bean, has shown to be chemically similar to human pheromones (sexual attractants). Vanilla is also said to have calming and mood-lifting effects.
Furthermore vanilla has shown anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties particularly in respect to skin infections. At the moment vanilla is being studied to combat cell mutations such as cancer, since it is assumed to have a positive effect on cell protection.
