Organic walnut halves - the Omega 3 bomb
The walnut tree has existed for over 2.5 million years and has been growing since the last ice age in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as in Central and Eastern Asia. Since Roman times, the walnut has been cultivated in almost all of Europe, especially in rather mild locations such as vineyards, as the tree is sensitive to cold winters.
Walnuts / walnuts have the highest content of omega-3 fatty acids (linolenic acids) (7.5g / 100g) among all nuts and are a good source of minerals and vitamins. Especially vitamin E, A, the B vitamins, zinc, potassium, magnesium, iron and calcium are included in them. They contain about 15% protein. Walnuts have a very high antioxidant capacity of 13541 μmol TE / 100g (ORAC = Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity).
Walnuts are a good source of tryptophan, a sleep-improving amino acid that produces serotonin and melatonin - the "body-clock" hormone that sets your sleep-wake cycles. Increasing melatonin levels can help with jet lag and insomnia.
Researchers at the University of Texas found that walnuts contain their own source of melatonin. Another study concludes that eating tree nuts may increase the levels of melatonin in the blood. Melatonin appears to have the most beneficial effects on insomnia in people over the age of 55 so they fall asleep faster and sleep better, and are more alert the next day.
