Lucuma – Heavenly Delicious Fruit Powder
Lucuma, "the Gold of the Inkas" is a subtropical exotic fruit native to South America and has long been revered by the ancient Andean culture. The healthy fruit powder with low glycemic index is particularly rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin B1 and B2. Its divine smell and pastry-like sweetness refines any dessert. In Peru, the yellowish-orange fruit is the most popular flavour for ice cream.
Lucuma's low sugar content makes it a healthy alternative to sugar for people who have diabetes and other illnesses, as well as those growing numbers of people who want to enjoy delicious delights while maintaining vibrant health.
Our lucuma powder is sun-dried at low temperatures, and then gently ground and sieved.
Why we love Lucuma
Since we were introduced to lucuma powder, it has become one of our favourite foods, and most raw fooders and health conscious people, once they have tried it, consider it a staple in their kitchen.
Its unique biscuitty sweetness makes it a winner in (raw) cakes, desserts and chocolates. We love adding it to our creams and ice creams and as a gourmet addition to all sweeties.
Lucuma powder gives a rich, creamy texture and will turn your raw food creations into gourmet heavenly delights! We use it mostly in sweet dishes but we have friends and customers saying they have tried it in savoury dishes with very good results.
Although lucuma grows in other tropical regions, the fruits grown in the Peruvian highlands are considered to be of superior flavour. This is where our lucuma powder comes from.
Our lucuma powder is free from any pesticides and agro-chemicals and is delivered to you as a beautiful tan powder with flavours that hint of maple syrup and cashews.
It is dried in a low temperature sun-dryer to raw quality standards, ground gently, and then sifted to produce a fine powder which easily blends into smoothies and desserts.
Lucuma powder is an extremely versatile and tasty ingredient which blends well with ice creams, baby food, yogurts, pies, cakes, chocolates and desserts and can be used to make lucuma mousse, pudding or parfait. It can be used as a flour to make pies, cakes and pastries and can also be added to smoothies, nutmilk and other beverages.
Like maca, lucuma helps to draw together (and emulsify) fats and oils with sugars and polysaccharides. For example, lucuma is great to add to a recipe or beverage containing cacao nibs (50% fat) and yacon root syrup (sugars and polysaccharides). It will draw the cacao and yacon together in flavour and texture. Please see our recipe page.
