On everyone's lips - Superfoods
In the last few years, the term superfood has become increasingly common. These foods are often described as all-rounders, and many experts suggest that it is a good idea to consume these energy and nutrient-rich foods regularly. They are a valuable addition to our modern day diets, which are often made up of many foods that unfortunately are not always able to deliver what the body needs. The superfoods are able to compensate for many deficiencies and create a healthy balance in the organism.
What are Superfoods?
Anyone who hears the term for the first time might think that Superfoods are perhaps foods that are created artificially, foods with added artificial vitamins and minerals to act as a dietary supplement. However, this is not the case! In fact, it’s quite the opposite - what makes superfoods stand out is that they naturally have a high amount of nutrients which are good for us and promote energy and vitality.
And that’s the reason why many times superfoods are also called natural medicine. They can significantly improve health and contribute to the fact that people who regularly incorporate them into their diet will potentially not need artificial supplements to give their body what they need to improve general health, strengthen the immune system and energise the body.
Some popular Superfoods are:
- Chia seeds, known since Aztec times as runners’ foods
- Spirulina, with its very high protein content, available in powder or tablet form
- Austrian Hemp seeds and hemp oil from Switzerland and Austria
- Turmeric, one of the best researched natural anti-inflammatories in the plant world
- Baobab, a delicious calcium rich African superfruit
- Maca, which has been known in the Andes for thousands of years
- Highly nutritious Wild-harvested Blueberries
- Cacao nibs with its many antioxidants and feel-good properties
- Barley grass powder, a natural multi-vitamin and multi-mineral
There is also a large variety of other superfood products that can be used in different ways and offer different flavours to please everyone’s palate. You can find more information about superfoods here.
How to use Superfoods?
A major advantage of many superfood foods is that they are easy to add to different recipes and do not need to be cooked, as shown on our Superfood recipes page. It is easy to incorporate the powders, fruits and seeds into the typical diet and with that, benefit from feeling more vital and healthier.
For example, chia seeds are easy to mix in yoghurt or muesli, but can also be mixed into smoothies. Goji berries, mulberries, jujube dates and pomegranate seed, can be eaten directly from the package and consumed as a fruity-energizing snack. Hemp oil, which is rich in important omega-3 fatty acids as well as organic hemp flour, which is naturally gluten- and lactose-free and rich in fibre and proteins, can be used directly instead or combined with other oils or flours.
Use of superfood powders and spices in cooking
SamaraNatura’s shop is especially popular with superfood powders because they can easily be added to all kinds of dishes. For example Turmeric, is already being widely used as a condiment not only because of its yellow colouring in curry dishes and oriental dishes but because turmeric improves digestion, is a potent anti-inflammatory and strengthens the system as a whole. It supports the activities of many organs and thus protects the body from all kinds of diseases.
Maca powder, an all-time bestseller, is a true energy booster. The malty taste gives food a special, slightly caramel touch. It is particularly good in muesli, desserts and chocolate recipes. Anyone who starts the day with Maca will feel fully energised all day long.
African baobab fruit powder is fast growing in popularity. It contains a concentrated amount of minerals which contribute to the proper functioning of the organism; including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C. It is easy to incorporate in your daily recipes and adds a delicious lemony flavour to your smoothies and dishes.
